Winter Freeze: Keep Your Pipes From Bursting
Most Texas homes are not built for long freezes, which is why a few cold nights can turn into a big repair bill. A few simple steps go a long way.
Before it freezes
- Find your main water shutoff and make sure everyone in the house knows where it is.
- Disconnect garden hoses and cover outdoor faucets.
- Insulate exposed pipes in the attic, garage, and exterior walls.
- Keep the heat on, even if you are traveling. A setting of 55 degrees or higher is a good rule of thumb.
During the freeze
- Open cabinet doors under sinks so warm air can reach the pipes.
- Let faucets drip slowly on the coldest nights.
If a pipe bursts
- Shut off the main water valve right away.
- Take photos and video of the damage before you clean up.
- Make temporary repairs to prevent more damage, and keep your receipts.
- Call us so we can help you start the claim process.
